Book Description

From the bestselling author of The Quiet Tenant comes a propulsive new thriller: Fifteen years ago, Frida and her brother escaped a cult. Now her brother is the prime suspect in a murder investigation—and it isn’t the first time.

A MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK OF THE SUMMER: The New York TimesUSA Today, Oprah Daily, Boston GlobeMarie Claire, Crimereads, Apple Books, Goodreads, Brit + Co, She Reads

“Clémence Michallon is one of the most daring, exciting new voices in psychological suspense; she writes page turners with stunning and surprising depths.” – #1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Jewell

"Thought-provoking and shocking. A perfect summer read.”—Mary Kubica, New York Times bestselling author of She's Not Sorry

Innocence doesn't bail you out; it just makes you easier to trap.

Frida and Gabriel arrive seeking a fresh start at the stunning Ara Hotel in the secluded desert of Escalante, Utah. Once so close they were able to finish each other’s sentences, they’ve grown apart in recent years after a sudden, unspeakable tragedy. Now, at the luxe resort, they are ready to reconnect between dips in the pool and hikes on spectacular desert trails. It all feels like paradise—until the dead body of a beautiful young woman who was vacationing at the Ara with her powerful, much older husband is discovered.

When the local police arrive and suspicion quickly falls on Gabriel, Frida is forced to revisit memories from their upbringing in a cloistered cult in upstate New York, their dramatic escape, and the scandal that followed. Frida’s belief in Gabriel’s innocence never wavered at the time, but now even she can’t ignore the evidence mounting against him.

Alternating between past and present timelines, Our Last Resort builds toward a shattering climax that uncovers the fate of the murdered Ara guest and poses the question: how well do we ever really know those we love? Taut, gripping, and intense, Clémence Michallon’s latest suspense novel is a nail-biter until the last page, cementing her status as a major new talent in the genre.

My Thoughts

I loved The Quiet Tenant; it was my favorite book of the year. So when I saw that another book from this same author was going to be published, I was so excited, especially when I was given access to this free ARC copy.

I wont go on and on telling you how great this book is, how much I loved it. I will just say, do yourself a favor and read it. You won't regret it. Another masterpiece story. I love her writing and the 2 POV's, going back and forth between the past and the present.

Thank you Knopf and Netgalley, for the free ARC copy, in exchange for an honest review.

Book Review: The Last One At The Wedding: A Novel by Jason Rekulak- Psychological Thriller

Hello, dear Readers,

My book review of The Last One At The Wedding: A Novel by Jason Rekulak.

Title: The Last One At The Wedding: A Novel
Rating:  5/5 Stars
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Author: Jason Rekulak
Publisher: Flatiron Books
Publication Date: October 8, 2024
Language: English
Hardcover: 352 pages
Meet the Author: Jason Rekulak
Buy Me: Amazon

Book Description

From the author of the runaway hit Hidden Pictures, comes a stunning new work of domestic suspense

“Part conspiracy thriller, part family drama, The Last One at the Wedding kept my heart racing and my mind reeling.” ―Riley Sager.

"The ultimate middle-class Dad battles the 1% for his daughter's soul in the best thriller I've read all year." ―Grady Hendrix.

Frank Szatowski is shocked when his daughter, Maggie, calls him for the first time in three years. He was convinced that their estrangement would become permanent. He’s even more surprised when she invites him to her upcoming wedding in New Hampshire. Frank is ecstatic and determined to finally make things right.

He arrives to find that the wedding is at a private estate―very secluded, very luxurious, very much out of his league. It seems that Maggie failed to mention that she’s marrying Aidan Gardner, the son of a famous tech billionaire. Feeling desperately out of place, Frank focuses on reconnecting with Maggie and getting to know her new family. But it’s difficult: Aidan is withdrawn and evasive; Maggie doesn’t seem to have time for him, and he finds that the locals are disturbingly hostile to the Gardners. Frank needs to know more about this family his daughter is marrying, but if he pushes too hard, he could lose Maggie forever.

An edge-of-your-seat thriller that delves deep into the heart of one family,
The Last One at the Wedding is a work of brilliant suspense from a true modern master.

My Thoughts

I listened to the audiobook version of this book, and it did not influence my opinion in any way.

This is the second book I have read by this author, and although I absolutely loved Hidden Pictures, I have to admit that The Last One at the Wedding was fantastic. I listened to the audiobook version, and the narrator was also fantastic.

While Hidden Pictures was more of a paranormal/scary book, his new book was different in that sense. However, it still had suspense elements that made me a little afraid of the outcome. With unexpected twists and very complicated characters, this book is well-written and fast-paced and keeps you engaged from the beginning to the end.

Thank you, Macmillan Audio and Netgalley, for the Advanced Free Listening Copy, in exchange for an honest review.

Book Review: The Villa: A Novel by Rachel Hawkins-Psychological Thriller

Hello dear Readers,

My book review of The Villa: A Novel by Rachel Hawkins.

Title: The Wife Upstairs: A Novel

Author: Rachel Hawkins
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Publication Date: January 03, 2023
Language: English
Hardcover: 288 pages

Book Description

"Hawkins weaves an engrossing tale about betrayal, sisterhood, and the power of telling your own story. Captivating!" ––People

"Hawkins is the reigning queen of suspense." ––Heather Gudenkauf,
New York Times bestselling author

"The Villa teems with sexual tension, festering tempers, and questionable friendships." ––Sarah Penner, New York Times bestselling author

The bestselling author of The Wife Upstairs returns with a brilliant new gothic suspense set at an Italian villa with a dark history.

As kids, Emily and Chess were inseparable. But by their 30s, their bond has been strained by the demands of their adult lives. So when Chess suggests a girl's trip to Italy, Emily jumps at the chance to reconnect with her best friend.

Villa Aestas in Orvieto is a high-end holiday home now, but in 1974, it was known as Villa Rosato, and rented for the summer by a notorious rock star, Noel Gordon. In an attempt to reignite his creative spark, Noel invites up-and-coming musician, Pierce Sheldon to join him, as well as Pierce’s girlfriend, Mari, and her stepsister, Lara. But he also sets in motion a chain of events that leads to Mari writing one of the greatest horror novels of all time, Lara composing a platinum album––and ends in Pierce’s brutal murder.

As Emily digs into the villa’s complicated history, she begins to think there might be more to the story of that fateful summer in 1974. That perhaps Pierce’s murder wasn’t just a tale of sex, drugs, and rock & roll gone wrong, but that something more sinister might have occurred––and that there might be clues hidden in the now-iconic works that Mari and Lara left behind.

Yet the closer that Emily gets to the truth, the more tension she feels developing between her and Chess. As secrets from the past come to light, equally dangerous betrayals from the present also emerge––and it begins to look like the villa will claim another victim before the summer ends.

Inspired by Fleetwood Mac, the Manson murders, and the infamous summer Percy and Mary Shelley spent with Lord Byron at a Lake Geneva castle––the birthplace of
Frankenstein––The Villa welcomes you into its deadly legacy.

My Thoughts

My new Rachel Hawkins favorite.

I listened to the audiobook version. This did not affect my opinion of the book, it made the reading experience even better.

Love the Then-Now POV in books. The Villa was not the exception. It was a fast-paced, interesting, dark, and suspenseful story. The descriptions of The Villa were fascinating as well.

Thank you to the Publisher St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for the Advanced Free Copy in exchange for an honest review.

Book Review: The Prisoner: A Novel by B.A. Paris-Psychological Thriller

 Hello dear Readers,

My book review of The Prisoner: A Novel by B.A. Paris.

Title: The Prisoner: A Novel
Rating: 4/5 Stars

Author: B.A. Paris
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Publication Date: November 01, 2022
Language: English
Hardcover: 304 pages
Meet the Author: B.A. Paris

Book Description

With Behind Closed Doors, New York Times bestselling author B. A. Paris took the psychological thriller to shocking new heights. Now she’ll hold you captive with THE PRISONER―a stunning new thriller about one woman wed into a family with deadly intentions.

USA Today Bestseller!

Amelie has always been a survivor, from losing her parents as a child in Paris to making it on her own in London. As she builds a life for herself, she is swept up into a glamorous lifestyle where she married the handsome billionaire Ned Hawthorne.

But then, Amelie wakes up in a pitch-black room, not knowing where she is. Why has she been taken? Who are her mysterious captors? And why does she soon feel safer here, imprisoned, than she had begun to feel with her husband Ned?

In the vein of
Behind Closed Doors and The Therapist, multimillion-copy bestseller B. A. Paris is back with a gripping new suspense novel.

My Thoughts

I said this in my last review and will say it again. Every time there is a new B.A. Paris book out there, I get so excited. She has easily become one of my favorite authors. This time, her newest book, The Prisoner, is out. I received an advanced reader's copy. This did not influence my opinion of the book.

The Prisoner, although it may feel the characters are a little predictable in their actions but the story is well-written enough to keep you in suspense about what is happening. I would have liked more development in the backstory of Amelie's dad and also Amelie's savior, Caroline, however, there was enough to understand where actions and motives were coming from. Another great and entertaining work by the author.

I can honestly say I would read anything B.A. Paris writers, and cannot wait for her next book.

Thank you St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for the free Advanced Copy in Exchange for an honest review.

Book Review: Everything that happened to Miranda Huff by Javier Castillo-Psychological Thriller

Book Description

A weekend in a cabin in the woods.
A marriage in crisis.
A mysterious disappearance.

What happened to Miranda Huff?

A couple in crisis decides to spend a weekend away at a cabin in the woods in Hidden Springs, but when Ryan Huff arrives to meet up with Miranda, the door is open, there are two glasses of wine on the table, nobody is there, and the bathroom is covered in blood.

Everything That Happened to Miranda Huff is a dizzying psychological thriller in which it seems impossible that Miranda will ever be found alive. What Ryan doesn’t know is that his wife’s disappearance connects their story with that of his mentor, the great James Black, and with the discovery of the body of a woman who disappeared 30 years ago in the same forest.

After the overwhelming success of El día que se perdió la cordura (The Day Sanity Was Lost) and El día que se perdió el amor (The Day Love Was Lost), with more than 300,000 copies sold, Javier Castillo, master of suspense, displays his storytelling skill by delving into the mysteries of everyday life, there where our most primal fears hide. An intense reading experience that will leave you breathless.

The Night She Disappeared: A Novel by Lisa Jewell-Psychological Thriller/Women's Fiction

Hello dear Readers,

My book review of The Night She Disappeared: A Novel by Lisa Jewell.

Title: The Night She Disappeared: A Novel
Rating: 4/5 Stars
Genre: Psychological Thriller/Women's Fiction
Author: Lisa Jewell
Publisher: Atria Books
Publication Date: September 07, 2021
Language: English
Hardcover: 416 pages
Meet the Author: Lisa Jewell
Buy Me: Amazon

Book Description

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Then She Was Gone comes another riveting work of psychological suspense about a beautiful young couple’s disappearance on a gorgeous summer night, and the mother who will never give up trying to find them...

On a beautiful summer night in a charming English suburb, a young woman and her boyfriend disappear after partying at the massive country estate of a new college friend.

One year later, a writer moves into a cottage on the edge of the woods that border the same estate. Known locally as the Dark Place, the dense forest is the writer’s favorite area for long walks and it’s on one such walk that she stumbles upon a mysterious note that simply reads, “DIG HERE.”

Could this be a clue to what has happened to the missing young couple? And what exactly is buried in this haunted ground?

With her signature “rich, dark, and intricately twisted” (Ruth Ware, New York Times bestselling author) prose, Lisa Jewell has crafted a dazzling work of suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final page.

My Thoughts

Lisa did it again. Although this was another thriller, it felt slightly different from her other books. I think it has to do with the pace, was not slow but was not rushed either.

We had the chance to know a little about each character, it felt to me not secondary characters but all of them played a role in how the story unfolds.

I love that even though I fly through Lisa's books but I still enjoy them a lot, every single time. I cannot recommend her books enough.

Book Review: You Love Me: A You Novel by Caroline Kepnes- Mystery/ Thriller

 Hello dear Readers,

My book review of You Love Me: A You Novel by Caroline Kepnes.

Title: You Love Me: A You Novel
Rating: 3/5 Stars
Genre: Mystery/Thriller
Author: Caroline Kepnes
Publisher: Random House
Publication Date: April 06, 2021
Language: English
Hardcover: 400 pages
Meet the Author: Caroline Kepnes
Buy Me: Amazon

Book Description

The highly anticipated new thriller in Caroline Kepnes’s hit You series, now a blockbuster Netflix show—a compulsively readable trip into the deviant mind of the uniquely antisocial, savvy bookseller . . . Joe Goldberg.

“Fiendish, fast-paced, and very funny.”—Paula Hawkins, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Girl on the Train

ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS OF THE YEAR—Cosmopolitan, PopSugar, Literary Hub

Joe is done with the cities. He’s done with the muck and the posers, done with Love. Now, he’s saying hello to nature, to simple pleasures on a cozy island in the Pacific Northwest. For the first time in a long time, he can just breathe.

He gets a job at the local library—he does know a thing or two about books—and that’s where he meets her: Mary Kay DiMarco. Librarian. Joe won’t meddle, he will not obsess. He’ll win her the old-fashioned way . . . by providing a shoulder to cry on, a helping hand. Over time, they’ll both heal their wounds and begin their happily ever after in this sleepy town.

The trouble is . . . Mary Kay already has a life. She’s a mother. She’s a friend. She’s . . . busy.

True love can only triumph if both people are willing to make room for the real thing. Joe cleared his decks. He’s ready. And hopefully, with his encouragement and undying support, Mary Kay will do the right thing and make room for him.

My Thoughts

Unpopular opinion here, but I did not enjoy this book as much as I though I would. I loved You and Hidden Bodies, perhaps some time has passed between books, perhaps some things changed but unfortunately, book three did not make it for me.

It started very slow, I thought it would picked up at some point but never did. All that dialogue going on in Joe's head got really boring and tiring, almost making Joe a little annoying of a character at times. Then how some situations were predictable and some of the story line felt unnecessary.

I tried really hard to like it this book, to engage, kept reading in the hopes of the story getting more exciting but unfortunately, did not happen for me.

Thank you Random House and Netgalley for the advanced free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Book Review: La Chica de Nieve by Javier Castillo-Psychological Thriller

My book review of La Chica de Nieve by Javier Castillo.

Language: English
Paperback: 450 pages

Book Description

The perfect thriller that changes the rules of the genre.

The most famous Thanksgiving Day Parade on the planet.

A three-year-old girl goes missing.

Where is Kiera Templeton?

New York, 1998, Thanksgiving Day Parade. Kiera Templeton, only three years old, disappears into the crowd. After a frantic search throughout the city, someone finds a few strands of hair along with the clothes the little one was wearing that day.

In 2003, the day that would have been Kiera's eighth birthday, her parents, Aaron and Grace Templeton, receive a strange package with something unexpected: a VHS videotape with a one-minute recording of Kiera, playing in a room. Miren Triggs, a journalism student at Columbia University, is attracted to the case and begins a parallel investigation.

After his great success with El día que se perdió la cordura / The Day Sanity was Lost, El día que se perdió el amor / The Day Love Was Lost, and Todo lo que sucedió con Miranda Huff / Everything that Happened to Miranda Huff, with over 650,000 copies sold, Javier Castillo returns with Snow Girl, a game of mirrors and a dark journey into the deepest parts of despair. This is a novel that shows that the worst always goes unnoticed.

My Thoughts

Was eager to read something in Spanish, specifically a thriller. Had seen Javier Castillo books around for a while, and one day while browsing at the bookstore saw La Chica de Nieve, his most recent release, and decided to get it.

Glad I did. It was just what I needed.

La chica de Nieve is the story of Kiera, who at the age of three disappears at the Thanksgiving Parade in New York in 1998, and the desperate and painful journey her parents, the Police, and a journalist, Miren Triggs, go through, for many years, to try to find Kiera.

The story goes back and forth between the different periods of time the story unfolds at. I have always loved books told this way because it makes it easier to follow through.

The story evolves mainly around Miren, the journalist, and Kiera. I found Miren to be a very enigmatic, and complex character. The author does a great job in developing her story. Found her willingness to not give up in finding Kiera very compelling, almost like if by finding her Miren could save herself from all the pain she has carried for so long.

I love the setting of the story, New York. You can tell the author did a great job on his research. Description, dialogue, and character development, well done.

Overall, I liked La Chica de Nieve a lot. All the elements there, suspense, twists, unique but relatable characters and unexpected ending. I recommend 100% for Thriller/Suspense lovers.

Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the advanced free copy in exchange for an honest review.

My Thoughts

I have been a B.A. Paris fan since the publication of her first book, Behind Closed Doors. Super excited every time a new book comes out, and with The Dilemma was not different.

B.A. Paris never disappoints. I still love her writing style, and how unique the characters and the stories are. The Dilemma is not as dark as Behind Closed Door for example, in my opinion, however, what remains the same for me is unforgettable characters and unexpected twists in the stories, which makes her books so different from all the others in the same genre. I would definitely recommend this for B.A. Paris fans and also if you are looking for a great thriller.

Laura Lochner has never been lucky in love. She falls too hard and too fast, always choosing the wrong men.
