Book Description

If you could repeat one year of your life, what would you do differently? This heartwarming and hilarious novel from the authors of The Status of All Things and Your Perfect Life features three best friends who get the chance to return to the year they turned forty—the year that altered all of their lives, in ways big and small—and also get the opportunity to change their future.

Jessie loves her son Lucas more than anything, but it tears her up inside that he was conceived in an affair that ended her marriage to a man she still loves, a man who just told her he's getting remarried. This time around, she’s determined to bury the secret of Lucas’ paternity, and to repair the fissures that sent her wandering the first time.

Gabriela regrets that she wasted her most fertile years in hot pursuit of a publishing career. Yes, she’s one of the biggest authors in the world, but maybe what she really wanted to create was a family. With a chance to do it again, she’s focused on convincing her husband, Colin, to give her the baby she desires.

Claire is the only one who has made peace with her past: her twenty-two year old daughter, Emily, is finally on track after the turmoil of adolescence, and she's recently gotten engaged, with the two carat diamond on her finger to prove it. But if she’s being honest, Claire still fantasizes about her own missed opportunities: a chance to bond with her mother before it was too late, and the possibility of preventing her daughter from years of anguish. Plus, there’s the man who got away—the man who may have been her one true love.

But it doesn’t take long for all three women to learn that re-living a life and making different decisions only leads to new problems and consequences—and that the mistakes they made may, in fact, have been the best choices of all…

My Thoughts

What an emotional journey this book was. One that I'm willing to go through again just to re live the magic of love and the power of friendship.

The Year We Turned Forty is the story of three women, Claire, Gabriela and Jessie, mothers, daughters, a very successful Real Estate Agent, a Stay Home mom and a Best Selling Author, but most of all, three best friends, friends for almost a life time and how on Claire's 50th Birthday celebration they are given the opportunity to go back for one year to when they were Forty and change the path their lives followed, make different choices, undo past mistakes and is during this journey when they discover that as good as it sounds to have the chance to change the past it may not be a good idea, that sometimes trying to change what is already done can bring new situations, harder, more painful and more difficult to make the right decisions. Is it really worth it? Can we really change things without hurting other people along the way? Can we avoid the pain completely?

The Year We Turned Forty is a story about  mistakes, pain, regrets, suffering, doubt, losing loved ones, unsaid words, hidden feelings but is also about love, family, forgiveness, happiness, second chances, new opportunities, and what is constant throughout the whole book, a story about true, pure, honest and real friendship. It was fascinating, magical, sweet, beautiful to see how Claire, Gabriela and Jessie even in their darkness moments had each other's back. Never read a book before where the way friendship is presented moved me as much as this one did. WOW.

I loved this book. The writing style beautiful, the dialogue, the interactions between the characters magnificent, the characters, real, human, believable, reliable, just the right pace, this wonderful touch of magic. I could not put it down, is inviting, one from the moment you start reading it consumes you, it is really hard to leave the pages. I felt part of the story, part of the character's lives, I felt like I was there, I felt part of it the whole time.

I discovered Liz and Lisa's books last year and they have easily became one of my favorite Authors. I immediately felt in love with their books, their stories, their characters. The moment I knew there was a new book coming out I knew I needed it, I knew I had to read it. And was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy. Many many thanks to Atria Books and Netgalley for sending me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

The Year We Turned Forty. A book I totally recommend. A book that I'm certain everybody needs to read sometime in their lives.

My Favorite Quote

"As humans we often let our egos rule our decisions. We let fear stop us from reaching our true potential. We forget about love. But the heart? It never forgets. No matter what happens, no matter how hard things get, it always remembers".

My Thoughts

I really enjoyed and liked this book. Christian's story is very unique, he is a very unique and different character. It was a roller coaster of emotions for me because I wanted just to keep reading and know more but at the same time I did not want the book to end.

Loved how intriguing and the mystery element on it. Like I said I just wanted to keep reading and see what was going to happen next. The Author does a great job in presenting the characters, the story, very clear what is going on, just the right pace for me and, loved how we get to know Christian, how real he felt to me and absolutely loved the writing style.

Many thanks to the Author, K.C. Dunford for kindly send me a copy of the book for review.

Book Description

An unforgettable debut novel about a boy who goes missing, a family that is torn apart, and a nation on the brink.

During the rainy season of 1995, in the bustling town of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, one family's life is disrupted by the sudden disappearance of seventeen-year-old Paul Utu, beloved brother and son. As they grapple with the sudden loss of their darling boy, they embark on a painful and moving journey of immense power which changes their lives forever and shatters the fragile ecosystem of their once ordered family. Ajie, the youngest sibling, is burdened with the guilt of having seen Paul last and convinced that his vanished brother was betrayed long ago. But his search for the truth uncovers hidden family secrets and reawakens old, long forgotten ghosts as rumours of police brutality, oil shortages, and frenzied student protests serve as a backdrop to his pursuit.

In a tale that moves seamlessly back and forth through time, Ajie relives a trip to the family's ancestral village where, together, he and his family listen to the myths of how their people settled there, while the villagers argue over the mysterious Company, who found oil on their land and will do anything to guarantee support. As the story builds towards its stunning conclusion, it becomes clear that only once past and present come to a crossroads will Ajie and his family finally find the answers they have been searching for.

And After Many Days introduces Ile's spellbinding ability to tightly weave together personal and political loss until, inevitably, the two threads become nearly indistinguishable. It is a masterful story of childhood, of the delicate, complex balance between the powerful and the powerless, and a searing portrait of a community as the old order gives way to the new.

My Thoughts

It was very painful to read this book but dont get me wrong, painful yes but what an extraordinary debut novel. Paul Utu, one of these characters that will be really hard to forget. All that happens from the moment he goes missing, how his disappearance embarks his family in a journey to seek the truth and how this event unravels many other things not only in his family but all the people in town.

A beautifully written story, fast paced for me, with a lot to learn from the characters and a wonderful way of storytelling. Totally recommend this book.

Thank you Blogging for Books for sending this book in exchange for an honest review.

Book Review: Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel /Sci-Fi-Fantasy /NETGALLEY ARC

Hello dear Readers,

Below my book review of Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel.

Title: Sleeping Giants
Rating: 4/5 Stars
Genre: Sci-Fi-Fantasy
Author: Sylvain Neuvel
Publisher: Del Rey
Publication Date: April 26, 2016
Language: English
Hardcover: 320 pages

Book Description

An inventive debut in the tradition of World War Z and The Martian, told in the cutting-edge cadences of interviews, journal entries, transcripts, and news articles, Sleeping Giants is a literary thriller fueled by a quest for truth—and by a struggle for control of earthshaking power.

A girl named Rose is riding her new bike near her home in Deadwood, South Dakota, when she falls through the earth. She wakes up at the bottom of a square-shaped hole, its walls glowing with intricate carvings. But the firemen who come to save her peer down upon something even stranger: a little girl in the palm of a giant metal hand.
Seventeen years later, the mystery of the bizarre artifact remains unsolved—the object's origins, architects, and purpose unknown. Carbon dating defies belief; military reports are redacted; theories are floated, then rejected.
But some can never stop searching for answers.
Rose Franklin is now a highly trained physicist leading a top-secret team to crack the hand's code. And along with her colleagues, she is being interviewed by a nameless interrogator whose power and purview are as enigmatic as the relic they seek. What's clear is that Rose and her compatriots are on the edge of unraveling history's most perplexing discovery—and finally figuring out what it portends for humanity. But once the pieces of the puzzle are in place, will the result be an instrument of lasting peace or a weapon of mass destruction?

My Thoughts

Received this book without knowing much about the Author, only read the description and that is being compared to World War Z and The Martian. I loved the Martian and was very curious to see what Sleeping Giants was about and the story behind it, the characters.

Have to say I was very surprised what a great piece of Science Fiction this book is. I enjoyed it and liked it a lot. Found very interesting the format in which the story is told, Interviews, Journal entries and all the different elements in the story, science, technology, conspiracies, mystery, suspense. It was easy to read and fun at times which brings a little extra to the book.

Overall, a different story, unique the way is told, interesting characters and a great start for a new series. Totally recommended for fans of Sci-Fi or if just looking for a different read.

Thank you Ballantine and Netgalley for sending me this book in exchange for an honest review.
