Book Description

For fans of Gillian Flynn, Laura Lippman, and Paula Hawkins comes Holly Seddon’s arresting fiction debut—an engrossing thriller full of page-turning twists and turns, richly imagined characters, and gripping psychological suspense.

Some secrets never die. They’re just locked away.

Alex Dale is lost. Destructive habits have cost her a marriage and a journalism career. All she has left is her routine: a morning run until her body aches, then a few hours of forgettable work before the past grabs hold and drags her down. Every day is treading water, every night is drowning. Until Alex discovers Amy Stevenson. Amy Stevenson, who was just another girl from a nearby town until the day she was found unconscious after a merciless assault. Amy Stevenson, who has been in a coma for fifteen years, forgotten by the world. Amy Stevenson, who, unbeknownst to her doctors, remains locked inside her body, conscious but paralyzed, reliving the past.

Soon Alex’s routine includes visiting hours at the hospital, then interviews with the original suspects in the attack. But what starts as a reporter’s story becomes a personal obsession. How do you solve a crime when the only witness lived but cannot tell the tale? Unable to tear herself away from her attempt to uncover the unspeakable truth, Alex realizes she’s not just chasing a story—she’s seeking salvation.

Shifting from present to past and back again, Try Not to Breathe unfolds layer by layer until its heart-stopping conclusion. The result is an utterly immersive, unforgettable debut.

My Thoughts

After I read Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn I found myself loving the Mystery and Thrillers genre. Now is one of my favorites and I’m always looking for new books to read. For this reason when I read the book description of Try Not to Breathe I immediately became interested, I thought the premise was fantastic and wanted to read it and I’m glad I did.

I love the Author’s writing style. Was very surprised when I saw it was a debut novel. I was very impressed on how she presented the story. And like I said before my new found love for psychological thrillers and a wonderful writing style made the whole experience magical. I also love the cover, for me it contains something intriguing which increased my desire to read the book.

Try not to Breathe follows the story of Alex, a Journalist who after losing pretty much everything in her life finds herself with a drinking problem and a career to save. That is how she meets Amy, a girl who 15 years ago was brutally attacked and was left in come and has been in that state since then. Alex starts getting to know Amy and helps her to find out who attacked her which in 15 years nobody has been able to find out who it was.
I love the character of Alex who in my opinion is a very brave and strong person, trying to get her life back despite all that happened to her.

I like how the story is told from the two points of view, Alex and Amy’s. I like how hocked I was in the story from the beginning, I did not want to stop reading. I wanted to know more about the story, the things going on, the characters. I enjoyed very much reading it, the pace was perfect. It was just the perfect combination of suspense, unexpected twist, and great characters and loved how the author managed the description and dialogue.

Overall, a fantastic debut novel which I totally recommend.

Thank you Ballantine Books and Netgalley for providing me with the ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

Genre: Paranormal Romance/Fantasy
Author: Kerr-Ann Dempster

Book Description

A thrilling paranormal romance with a page-turning plot, witty dialogue, and characters who will befriend, betray, and astonish you!

Centuries ago, sibling rivalry tore Aramith apart. As punishment, the losers were stripped of their immortal birthright and banished to Earth. There, they wasted away from old age and diseases. However, there is hope…

If a Shaw child, born on the 12th day of the 12th month offers her soul in a public sacrifice, then the exiles will be forgiven and welcomed home to Aramith.

Aubrey Shaw is that child, but dying for the exiles is not on her to-do list. Using her gift as a Jumper, Aubrey leaps between bodies to escape relentless shape-shifting hunters. Only, shedding her skin is not enough. Not when Joshua, her best-friend-turned-hunter, is hell-bent on dragging her to the altar.

Will Aubrey’s love for Joshua change his mind?

Or, will she have to trust the scarred stranger who shows up out of the blue cloaked in lies and secrets? Doing so means giving up on Joshua. But betting on Joshua's love could do more than break her heart.

It could kill her.

My Thoughts

When it comes to reading I pretty much have certain genres that I read the most. However from time to time I find myself reading something totally out of my comfort zone. This was the case of The Reluctant Sacrifice. This was a very different and refreshing. I'm glad I got to meet Aubrey, Coy and Joshua's world.

The first few chapters went a little slow for me, maybe I was just trying to hard to figured out right away what was going on and dont miss a thing but once I let the characters to to speak to me, to show me their world and enjoy it the reading experience was a lot better. After that point it was fast paced, I just wanted to keep reading it.

I like how the Author did not try to hide the character's weaknesses or strengths, we can see them as they are, with their good things and their imperfections.

I also like the relationships in the book, not only the one between Aubrey and Coy but also the friendship Aubrey and Tessa built. I see Tessa as that girl best friend we all wan to have and Coy, well Coy, who cannot like Coy, I know I did and a lot. There were times when I did not like they way he talks to Aubrey but I could feel deep inside he truly cared and wanted to help her. Aubrey in the other hand, a difficult character to understand, not sure still how I feel about her. Joshua and Morgan, I have to say, I did not like it them but tried to understand their motives.

I like how all the elements on this book are connected and make it an interesting story. Love, magic, action, romance, friendship. I like the the Author's writing style and the dialogue how simple but yet powerful.

Overall, I great story. One that I recommend. I will definitely be reading book two. I cannot wait to see what is in store for all the characters.

Book Review: Eleanor: A Novel by Jason Gurley/Fiction-Sci-Fi-Fantasy

Hello dear Readers,

Below, my book review of Eleanor: A Novel by Jason Gurley.

Title: Eleanor

Genre: Fiction-Sci-Fi-Fantasy
Author: Jason Gurley
Publisher: Crown
Language: English
Hardcover: 384 pages

Book Description

Eleanor and Esmerelda are identical twins with a secret language all their own, inseparable until a terrible accident claims Esme’s life. Eleanor’s family is left in tatters: her mother retreats inward, seeking comfort in bottles; her father reluctantly abandons ship. Eleanor is forced to grow up more quickly than a child should, and becomes the target of her mother’s growing rage.

Years pass, and Eleanor’s painful reality begins to unravel in strange ways. The first time it happens, she walks through a school doorway, and finds herself in a cornfield, beneath wide blue skies. When she stumbles back into her own world, time has flown by without her. Again and again, against her will, she falls out of her world and into other, stranger ones, leaving behind empty rooms and worried loved ones.

One fateful day, Eleanor leaps from a cliff and is torn from her world altogether. She meets a mysterious stranger, Mea, who reveals to Eleanor the weight of her family’s loss. To save her broken parents, and rescue herself, Eleanor must learn how deep the well of her mother’s grief and her father’s heartbreak truly goes. Esmerelda’s death was not the only tragic loss in her family’s fragmented history, and unless Eleanor can master her strange new abilities, it may not be the last.

My Thoughts

I started reading this book without knowing much about it other than I loved the cover, that I was very intrigued by the title and the synopsis. As soon as I started reading it I knew it was going to be a very different book from the ones I'm used to read and hoped was going to be a enjoyable read, which it was. Actually this was a very rare but unique and beautifully written story.

I will allow myself on this one to use part of the book description because that was something else that made me want to choose and read this book. It is so powerful: "Eleanor and Esmerelda are identical twins with a secret language all their own, inseparable until a terrible accident claims Esme’s life. Eleanor’s family is left in tatters: her mother retreats inward, seeking comfort in bottles; her father reluctantly abandons ship. Eleanor is forced to grow up more quickly than a child should, and becomes the target of her mother’s growing rage".

There were times throughout the reading that I was really upset for all going on, I was so invested in the story that it was almost that I could feel what the characters were feeling and that is huge part of what a great story teller does. Eleanor is a story of loss, tragedy, grief, but it is also a story of coming to terms with really even thought the reality is very painful.

Eleanor shows the powerful writing style of his Author and how he wants to give the characters the place they deserve in the story. I like how all the elements on this books are well combined to bring us a magnificent piece of art. Very touching subjects and matters surround the story but they way the Author manages to work them is brilliant.

Overall, unique and hearth felt story, a fantastic book which I totally recommend.

Hello dear Readers,

Language: English
Hardcover: 272 pages

Book Description

An intense memoir about mental illness, memory and storytelling, from an acclaimed novelist.

When Rob Roberge learns that he's likely to have developed a progressive memory-eroding disease from years of hard living and frequent concussions, he is terrified by the prospect of becoming a walking shadow. In a desperate attempt to preserve his identity, he sets out to (somewhat faithfully) record the most formative moments of his life—ranging from the brutal murder of his childhood girlfriend, to a diagnosis of rapid-cycling bipolar disorder, to opening for famed indie band Yo La Tengo at The Fillmore in San Francisco. But the process of trying to remember his past only exposes just how fragile the stories that lay at the heart of our self-conception really are.

As Liar twists and turns through Roberge’s life, it turns the familiar story of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll on its head. Darkly funny and brutally frank, it offers a remarkable portrait of a down and out existence cobbled together across the country, from musicians’ crashpads around Boston, to seedy bars popular with sideshow freaks in Florida, to a painful moment of reckoning in the scorched Wonder Valley desert of California. As Roberge struggles to keep addiction and mental illness from destroying the good life he has built in his better moments, he is forced to acknowledge the increasingly blurred line between the lies we tell others and the lies we tell ourselves.

Book Description

I thought I'd left Blackwater, Texas behind for good. I didn't belong in the small town, but my dad wouldn't listen. He dragged me back home in his beat-up truck and dropped a bomb along the way: Chase Matthews was moving in with us. He was the golden boy of my high school, my former best friend, and the last person I wanted sleeping across the hall. His presence was too great a reminder of the ghosts I was trying to forget.

I didn't ask for a hero. I don't want to be saved.

To me, Lilah Calloway meant late nights sneakin' out, moonlit hair, and sparklers in July. She was my best friend until the day she left and I'd assumed Blackwater had seen the last of her. Then, like a tempest, she rolled back into town for the final half of senior year. The chopped hair and dark devil-may-care attitude warned most people away, but I knew if I fought hard enough, I could find the lost girl.

I didn't want to be her hero. Some girls don't need to be saved.

Book Description

The USA TODAY bestselling author of the Ten Tiny Breaths and Burying Water series makes her suspense debut with this sexy, heartpounding story of a young woman determined to find justice after her best friend’s death, a story pulsing with the “intense, hot, emotional” (Colleen Hoover) writing that exhilarates her legions of fans.

A woman who almost had it all . . .

On the surface, Celine Gonzalez had everything a twenty-eight-year-old woman could want: a one-bedroom apartment on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, a job that (mostly) paid the bills, and an acceptance letter to the prestigious Hollingsworth Institute of Art, where she would finally live out her dream of becoming an antiques appraiser for a major auction house. All she had worked so hard to achieve was finally within her reach. So why would she kill herself?

A man who was supposed to be her salvation . . .

Maggie Sparkes arrives in New York City to pack up what’s left of her best friend’s belongings after a suicide that has left everyone stunned. The police have deemed the evidence conclusive: Celine got into bed, downed a lethal cocktail of pills and vodka, and never woke up. But when Maggie discovers a scandalous photograph in a lock box hidden in Celine’s apartment, she begins asking questions. Questions about the man Celine fell in love with. The man she never told anyone about, not even Maggie. The man Celine believed would change her life.

Until he became her ruin.

On the hunt for evidence that will force the police to reopen the case, Maggie uncovers more than she bargained for about Celine’s private life—and inadvertently puts herself on the radar of a killer. A killer who will stop at nothing to keep his crimes undiscovered.

My Thoughts

Have to say what first caught my attention about this book was its cover. It's beautiful. Then I read the description and thought it sounded very interesting, different. After reading it, I can say, it was not disappointing. I couldn't put it down. I found the characters, the writing style, the story line, the description, the world the author wanted to show us fantastic. It was a little hard to get into the story in the beginning but once I did I couldn't stop. I liked that all that I thought was going to happen, when I thought I had all figured out but it was not the case, the book kept surprising me and kept me interested. I beautifully written story, set in the 70-90 Paris and London where I found myself wanted to know more about the characters, their journey and their quest for love and all the mystery it was involved.

My Thoughts

I have read many memoirs. It is always intriguing to me to read about other peoples lives. In the case of Liar, a memoir on mental illness and drug addiction. This is by far the darkest memoir I have ever read. How Rob goes through his childhood and adulthood, all the things that have happened in his life, his struggles, but finding hope and good moments. It made me feel a little depressed at times but have to say the way he tells the story is smart, a much perfect writing style and even though like I said is a very sad and depressing story but an interesting an well written one.
