Book Review: Category Jeremy: Chronicles of Dover's Amalgam Book 2 by Elizabetta Holcomb/Romance-Historical

Hello dear Readers,

Below my book review of Category Jeremy: Chronicles of Dover's Amalgam Book 2 by Elizabetta Holcomb.

Title: Category Jeremy: Chronicles of Dover's Amalgam Book 1
Rating: 5/5 Stars
Genre: Romance-Historical
Author: Elizabetta Holcomb
Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform
Publication Date: June 1, 2016
Language: English

Book Description
Jeremiah Cameron Tremaine. Within the body of Jeremy is a weapon of mass destruction. Being the strongest host in Dover’s Amalgam, he is a hurricane of a class all by himself. The strongest host alive. Living between two time periods: one life in medieval Dover and the other in modern Louisiana, England, and the Cayman Islands, he finds life becomes a cluster of unfortunate events that bring him face to face with the girl he left behind.

Beau Angelle Benoit. Eight years ago, something happened to Jeremy. After being lost in Hurricane Libby, Beau was there when they found him naked, half starved, and surrounded by dead animals. She could hear him speaking without ever opening his mouth and when he touched her, she could feel the energy he contained. But instead of trusting her with his abilities, he left her to face government officials who probed her mind and a town that thought her a lunatic.

Reunited

Jeremy is back in his hometown of Gueydan, Louisiana to help with church reform and to dismantle host formation as the dawn of mega storms comes to the south coast. When he sees that Beau is in need of hero, he is more than happy to be that person. Wanting to see her reputation restored, he will do anything to make right the wrongs he is responsible for in her life—even if it means to lie to her so he can protect her from becoming a target for the enemies of Dover. The Hun’s are back and forming an army of host of its own, plowing down anyone that stands in their way of power and complete control of Dover’s Amalgam.

My Thoughts
Category Jeremy, the second book in the Chronicles of Dover's Amalgam, another great book by Elizabetta Holcomb. While Book 1, The Guardian focuses more on the main characters, Jareth and Elizabet, how they met and their love relationship, Category Jeremy focuses more on Jeremy and Beau and all the journey they go through. I have to say I loved book 1 and even though book 2 introduces us to these new characters but somehow it helps to have a better understanding on what previously happened and at the end what to expect next in the story. As I mentioned before, I love the Author's writing style and her ability developing characters and world building. I think is fascination how through her writing she can transport us to the world she wants to show us, the story intended to be told. A great addition to the Series which I totally recommend and cannot wait to read the next book.

Many, many thanks to the Author, Elizabetta Holcomb for kindly send me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Hello dear Readers,

This week, a Mystery/ Thriller, All The Missing Girls: A Novel by Megan Miranda.

Title: All The Missing Girls

Author: Megan Miranda
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Publication Date: June 28, 2016
Language: English
Hardcover: 384 pages
Meet the Author: Megan Miranda

Book Description

Like the spellbinding psychological suspense in The Girl on the Train and Luckiest Girl Alive, Megan Miranda’s novel is a nail-biting, breathtaking story about the disappearances of two young women—a decade apart—told in reverse.

It’s been ten years since Nicolette Farrell left her rural hometown after her best friend, Corinne, disappeared from Cooley Ridge without a trace. Back again to tie up loose ends and care for her ailing father, Nic is soon plunged into a shocking drama that reawakens Corinne’s case and breaks open old wounds long since stitched.

The decade-old investigation focused on Nic, her brother Daniel, boyfriend Tyler, and Corinne’s boyfriend Jackson. Since then, only Nic has left Cooley Ridge. Daniel and his wife, Laura, are expecting a baby; Jackson works at the town bar; and Tyler is dating Annaleise Carter, Nic’s younger neighbor and the group’s alibi the night Corinne disappeared. Then, within days of Nic’s return, Annaleise goes missing.

Told backwards—Day 15 to Day 1—from the time Annaleise goes missing, Nic works to unravel the truth about her younger neighbor’s disappearance, revealing shocking truths about her friends, her family, and what really happened to Corinne that night ten years ago.

Like nothing you’ve ever read before, All the Missing Girls delivers in all the right ways. With twists and turns that lead down dark alleys and dead ends, you may think you’re walking a familiar path, but then Megan Miranda turns it all upside down and inside out and leaves us wondering just how far we would be willing to go to protect those we love.

Hello dear Readers,

I cannot recommend this book enough. I'm planning or re-reading it here pretty soon and re-visit these amazing characters, Marie-Laure and Werner and Anthony Doerr's magnificent writing.

I love this book. One of my favorites of 2014, and one of the best book I have ever read.

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr.

*National Book Award Finalist

Book Description
WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE

From the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr, the beautiful, stunningly ambitious instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge.

Doerr’s “stunning sense of physical detail and gorgeous metaphors” (San Francisco Chronicle) are dazzling. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, he illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Ten years in the writing, a National Book Award finalist, All the Light We Cannot See is a magnificent, deeply moving novel from a writer “whose sentences never fail to thrill” (Los Angeles Times).

Book Review: It Ain't So Awful Falafel: A Novel by Firoozeh Dumas/Children's Books-Literarute-Fiction-Growing Up & Facts of Life

Hello dear Readers,

Below my book review of It ain't so awful Falafel: A Novel by Firoozeh Dumas.

This is Firoozeh Dumas's most recent published work. It is a little bit different from her other books, more oriented to children, middle-grade audience, a middle -grade fiction debut novel but in my opinion Teens and Adults could enjoy it as well. The Author keeps the humor, the reality, her unique voice we can find in her other books, this time we meet Zomorod and her journey, family, friendship, to adapt to a different culture and the power of love and kindness

Title: It Ain't So Awful Falafel: A Novel

Book Description
Zomorod (Cindy) Yousefzadeh is the new kid on the block . . . for the fourth time. California’s Newport Beach is her family’s latest perch, and she’s determined to shuck her brainy loner persona and start afresh with a new Brady Bunch name—Cindy.

It’s the late 1970s, and fitting in becomes more difficult as Iran makes U.S. headlines with protests, revolution, and finally the taking of American hostages. Even mood rings and puka shell necklaces can't distract Cindy from the anti-Iran sentiments that creep way too close to home.

A poignant yet lighthearted middle grade debut from the author of the best-selling Funny in Farsi.

My Thoughts

As I mentioned on a previous post Firoozeh Dumas is now one of my favorites Authors. Why? I love the way she tells her stories, her unique voice and how even if she is talking about serious topics but she always finds a way to put a little bit of humor on everything she writes. It ain't so awful Falafel is not the exception.

It ain't so awful Falafel follows the story of Zomorod, an eleven year old girl from Iran and her journey living in America. Her father, an Oil Engineer is assigned to come to America to work on a project with an Oil company so is the fourth time Zomorod finds herself in a new city, New Port Beach, California, being the new kid, new school and a new start.
Despite all the obstacles Zomorod or Cindy encounters, she changes her name so it's easier for Americans to pronounce it and remember it, having to adapt to a new culture, a new city, new neighbors, not so sure if she will fit in her new school, being one of the highlights in the story the not so good relationship between the USA and Iran in the late 1970's and all the bad things that situation brought to Iranians living in the USA but Zomorod manages to make new friends, Carolyn, Howie and Rachel and wont say much, dont want to spoil the book but at the end things come to a good resolution for Zomorod, her mom and dad which made me really happy.

What a like about this book? Everything, the writing, the characters, the humor, the story. It was so good to have Zomorod as the narrator. I love her. Her voice and how conscious of her reality she is for an 11 year old and how she always tries to see the best on every situation no matter how hard it is. I love her excitement on every new situation she gets to experiment in America. When she joins the Girl Scouts, goes camping, Halloween, eating Tacos. I love how appreciative she is of all these moments. Zomorod is a very smart, funny and curious girl, again for her age, so conscious and observant of her own reality and the people around her.

"So I chose the most normal American name I knew, Cindy. Like the Cindy Brady from The Brady Bunch.

It's not like I'm trying to pretend that I'm not Iranian. I just want people to ask questions about me when we meet, not about where I'm from. Why does that matter, anyway? Yes, there are a few differences between me and any other kid in America, but these are the main ones:

1. I speak Persian at home.

2 The only pet I have ever owned is a goldfish. I realize that goldfish are a sad excuse for a pet, since you cannot hold them, walk them, train them, or do anything fun at all. Worst of all, they never act like they like you, no matter what do you do for them.

3. My mom does not know how to make oatmeal raisin cookies.

4. All my friends are in books."

This book is so captivating, could not put it down, read it in two days and did not want it to end.

All the cultural elements behind it and as the Author explains at the end, this is semi-autobiographical, some parts really happened in the Authors life, makes you somehow feel more connected to the story, to the characters, to the writing.
It ain't so awful Falafel, a story about family, love, friendship, and one thing that is mentioned and prevails in the story, kindness, no matter how bad things were, Zomorod's family always tried to show kindness to other people, no hate but kindness.

"I have always depended on the kindness of strangers". -Blanche DuBois, A Streetcar Named Desire.

It ain't so awful Falafel, a book I totally recommend. Cant wait for more of Firoozeh books to come out.

My Favorite Quote
"If I had one son and one daughter and could only educate one of them, I would educate my daughter. You know why? A girl without an education has no power, she is always at the mercy of others". -Zomorod (Cindy)'s dad.

Book Review: The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi/YA-Fantasy-Romance

Hello dear Readers,

This was the book we picked for our May IG Book Club. My book review as follows.

A fantastic debut work, which I highly recommend.

Title: The Star-Touched Queen
Rating: 5/5 Stars
Genre: YA/Fantasy/Romance
Author: Roshani Chokshi
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Publication Date: April 26, 2016
Language: English
Hardcover: 352 pages

Book Description
Fate and fortune. Power and passion. What does it take to be the queen of a kingdom when you're only seventeen?
Maya is cursed. With a horoscope that promises a marriage of Death and Destruction, she has earned only the scorn and fear of her father's kingdom. Content to follow more scholarly pursuits, her whole world is torn apart when her father, the Raja, arranges a wedding of political convenience to quell outside rebellions. Soon Maya becomes the queen of Akaran and wife of Amar. Neither roles are what she expected: As Akaran's queen, she finds her voice and power. As Amar's wife, she finds something else entirely: Compassion. Protection. Desire...
But Akaran has its own secrets -- thousands of locked doors, gardens of glass, and a tree that bears memories instead of fruit. Soon, Maya suspects her life is in danger. Yet who, besides her husband, can she trust? With the fate of the human and Otherworldly realms hanging in the balance, Maya must unravel an ancient mystery that spans reincarnated lives to save those she loves the most. . .including herself.
A lush and vivid story that is steeped in Indian folklore and mythology. The Star-touched Queen is a novel that no reader will soon forget.

My Thoughts

First thing I want to say is this is one of the best books I have read this year. Yes, it's that great. An amazing mix between Indian elements and Mythology.

That being said, I loved the writing style, to me this is the highlight of the entire book, magical, beautiful. I still can't believe this is a debut novel. I congratulate the Author for such an incredible story.

A magnificent world-building, all the images, how well-described the places are, how i felt part of it all, I was so immersed in this world, I wanted to know more about it, about the Otherworld, the characters, oh Maya and Amar, their relationship and what was destined for them.

What such refreshing and different the love story of Maya and Amar is. Why? Because of how real it felt to me. From the very beginning, the first time they see each other, from there, they go through difficult times but somehow they manage to stay together, maybe not physically but Maya never forgets about him. i just loved the dialogues, the interactions between them, their scenes, real, intense, powerful.

I found very interesting the story behind Maya, a 17 year old princess with a bad horoscope, everybody fears her even her father , the Raja who promises her in marriage to a prince to avoid or prevent war when Maya doesn't even want to get married, not like that anyway, not forced. Maya always wanted for her life to be something different, something else. I like how even though she suffers and goes through difficult situations, and perhaps she doesn't make the right choices, the right decisions all the time but she keeps going, she fights to find the true, she always does try to be different.

"Although I had never envisioned marriage, I had thought of love. Not the furtive love I heard muffled in the corners or rooms of some of the harem wives".

Overall, The Star-Touched Queen is a book with all the elements of an amazing story. Unforgettable characters, a magnificent setting and writing, a great mix between mythical and magical elements, romance, action and some unexpected twists. A debut novel which I totally recommend.

My Favorite Quote
"A memory is a fine legacy to leave behind".

Book Review: Hidden Bodies: A Novel by Caroline Kepnes/Mystery-Thriller-Suspense

Hello dear Readers,

Below, my book review of Hidden Bodies: A Novel by Caroline Kepnes. This is the Sequel to her fantastic debut novel, You, which you can find my book review in the link below. Both reads highly recommended.

Title: Hidden Bodies: A Novel
Rating: 5/5 Stars
Publication Date: February 23, 2016
Genre: Mystery-Thriller-Suspense
Author: Caroline Kepnes
Publisher: Atria
Language: English
Hardcover: 448 pages
Buy Me: Amazon
Meet the Author: Caroline Kepnes

Book Description

In the compulsively readable follow-up to her widely acclaimed debut novel, You, Caroline Kepnes weaves a tale that Booklist calls “the love child of Holden Caulfield and Patrick Bateman.”

Hidden Bodies marks the return of a voice that Stephen King described as original and hypnotic, and through the divisive and charmingly sociopathic character of Joe Goldberg, Kepnes satirizes and dissects our culture, blending suspense with scathing wit.

Joe Goldberg is no stranger to hiding bodies. In the past ten years, this thirty-something has buried four of them, collateral damage in his quest for love. Now he’s heading west to Los Angeles, the city of second chances, determined to put his past behind him.

In Hollywood, Joe blends in effortlessly with the other young upstarts. He eats guac, works in a bookstore, and flirts with a journalist neighbor. But while others seem fixated on their own reflections, Joe can’t stop looking over his shoulder. The problem with hidden bodies is that they don’t always stay that way. They re-emerge, like dark thoughts, multiplying and threatening to destroy what Joe wants most: truelove. And when he finds it in a darkened room in Soho House, he’s more desperate than ever to keep his secrets buried. He doesn’t want to hurt his new girlfriend—he wants to be with her forever. But if she ever finds out what he’s done, he may not have a choice...

My Thoughts

Joe Goldberg. Oh My. The more Joe I read, the more I need, the more fascinating he becomes. Why? I have never came across a character like him. I know, he has a twisted mind, he does horrible things, he kills people but in a very unique way Joe is Joe, a human who makes mistakes and one who does not give up that easily and again, in a very twisted way but he is capable of loving, yes he is.

Hidden Bodies, the sequel of Caroline Kepnes debut novel, You, continues the story of Joe Goldberg, a bookseller from New York who in this sequel falls in love with Amy, who he thinks is finally the right girl, the love of her life but Amy betrays him, steels some books from him, leaves him and goes to Los Angeles. Joe, hungry for revenge, leaves New York and goes to LA to find Amy and kill her but little Joe knew what he was going to find in LA and how his plans were going to change dramatically. In LA Joe comes up with a plan to find Amy, meets new people, gets a job but along the way he meets Love and that is when everything changes, Love changes Joe and Amy is no longer his priority.

I dont want to spoil the book for those who have not read it. I will just say if you read You  and liked it, you should definitely pick this one.

In terms of the book, the story, I couldn't put it down. I just wanted to keep reading and know what was going to happen next. This is the kind of book that makes you want to know more about the characters, a story which I felt totally invested in. I like how every chapter is not that long, just the right length. I like the dialogues and how every character brings something to the story. I love Caroline Kepnes writing style. I think the way she tells her stories is fascinating. The characters are so different. I also love how the Author uses Pop Culture references in the book like Fast and Furious, which by the way is one of my favorite movies. I think all these references work really well in the story.

What I did not like, well, I did not like the story came to an end but given the ending which in my opinion is an open ending,  I think and I hope we will hear more about Joe Goldberg soon.

Overall, I love Hidden Bodies. A fantastic sequel, great plot, well- developed characters, a few unexpected twists, a book that catches your attention from the beginning to the end. Caroline Kepnes is now one of my favorite Authors and I cant wait to read more of her books.
