Book Description

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“This is a book people will be talking about forever.”
Glennon Doyle, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Untamed

“Ford’s wrenchingly brilliant memoir is truly a classic in the making. The writing is so richly observed and so suffused with love and yearning that I kept forgetting to breathe while reading it.” ―John Green, #1 New York Times bestselling author

One of the most prominent voices of her generation debuts with an extraordinarily powerful memoir: the story of a childhood defined by the looming absence of her incarcerated father.

Through poverty, adolescence, and a fraught relationship with her mother, Ashley C. Ford wishes she could turn to her father for hope and encouragement. There are just a few problems: he’s in prison, and she doesn’t know what he did to end up there. She doesn’t know how to deal with the incessant worries that keep her up at night, or how to handle the changes in her body that draw unwanted attention from men. In her search for unconditional love, Ashley begins dating a boy her mother hates. When the relationship turns sour, he assaults her. Still reeling from the rape, which she keeps secret from her family, Ashley desperately searches for meaning in the chaos. Then, her grandmother reveals the truth about her father’s incarceration . . . and Ashley’s entire world is turned upside down.

Somebody’s Daughter steps into the world of growing up a poor Black girl in Indiana with a family fragmented by incarceration, exploring how isolating and complex such a childhood can be. As Ashley battles her body and her environment, she embarks on a powerful journey to find the threads between who she is and what she was born into, and the complicated familial love that often binds them.

My Thoughts

''It wasn't lost on me that I mostly spoke my truth in the spaces that my family was absent.''

Somebody's daughter is a beautiful, heartbreaking, honest, and raw account of Ashley's childhood, teenage years, and adulthood. Having to deal with the fact that her father is in prison for rape and that basically, she grew up without that father figure fully present in her life.

Worth mentioning, this is a beautifully written memoir however the topics exposed mostly are not. Trigger warnings on rape, cancer, incarceration of a family member, body image issues, and domestic violence.

I always say I admire how brave people are by telling their stories, and that you can always see something you can relate to. The honesty with which the author talks about these serious issues is appreciated.

Her complicated relationship with her mother and the beautiful one with her grandmother is what stood up to me the most, but also, how willing the author was to also have a real relationship with her father despite the circumstances.

Another incredible memoir, really worth the time to read.

Book Review: Everything that happened to Miranda Huff by Javier Castillo-Psychological Thriller

Hello dear Readers,

My book review of Everything that happened to Miranda Huff by Javier Castillo.

Title: Everything that happened to Miranda Huff
Rating: 4/5 Stars
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Author: Javier Castillo
Publisher: Suma
Publication Date: May 21, 2019
Language: English
Paperback: 448 pages
Meet the Author: Javier Castillo

Book Description

A weekend in a cabin in the woods.
A marriage in crisis.
A mysterious disappearance.

What happened to Miranda Huff?

A couple in crisis decides to spend a weekend away at a cabin in the woods in Hidden Springs, but when Ryan Huff arrives to meet up with Miranda, the door is open, there are two glasses of wine on the table, nobody is there, and the bathroom is covered in blood.

Everything That Happened to Miranda Huff is a dizzying psychological thriller in which it seems impossible that Miranda will ever be found alive. What Ryan doesn’t know is that his wife’s disappearance connects their story with that of his mentor, the great James Black, and with the discovery of the body of a woman who disappeared 30 years ago in the same forest.

After the overwhelming success of El día que se perdió la cordura (The Day Sanity Was Lost) and El día que se perdió el amor (The Day Love Was Lost), with more than 300,000 copies sold, Javier Castillo, master of suspense, displays his storytelling skill by delving into the mysteries of everyday life, there where our most primal fears hide. An intense reading experience that will leave you breathless.

My Thoughts

Another great story by Javier Castillo.

I love how easy to read his books are, short chapters and fast-paced ones. I have found a new favorite author in Javier Castillo. His writing is simple in the sense that is to the point but he has the power to make you immerse in the story from page one.

His characters are well-developed, and always fascinated at how he sets the scene so well that you feel you are right there in the place with the character.

Overall, another great read and looking forward to more new books by Javier.

The Night She Disappeared: A Novel by Lisa Jewell-Psychological Thriller/Women's Fiction

Hello dear Readers,

My book review of The Night She Disappeared: A Novel by Lisa Jewell.

Book Description

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Then She Was Gone comes another riveting work of psychological suspense about a beautiful young couple’s disappearance on a gorgeous summer night, and the mother who will never give up trying to find them...

On a beautiful summer night in a charming English suburb, a young woman and her boyfriend disappear after partying at the massive country estate of a new college friend.

One year later, a writer moves into a cottage on the edge of the woods that border the same estate. Known locally as the Dark Place, the dense forest is the writer’s favorite area for long walks and it’s on one such walk that she stumbles upon a mysterious note that simply reads, “DIG HERE.”

Could this be a clue to what has happened to the missing young couple? And what exactly is buried in this haunted ground?

With her signature “rich, dark, and intricately twisted” (Ruth Ware, New York Times bestselling author) prose, Lisa Jewell has crafted a dazzling work of suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final page.

My Thoughts

Lisa did it again. Although this was another thriller, it felt slightly different from her other books. I think it has to do with the pace, was not slow but was not rushed either.

We had the chance to know a little about each character, it felt to me not secondary characters but all of them played a role in how the story unfolds.

I love that even though I fly through Lisa's books but I still enjoy them a lot, every single time. I cannot recommend her books enough.

Book Review: Cloud Cuckoo Land: A Novel by Anthony Doerr/Historical Fiction

 Hello dear Readers,

My book review of Cloud Cuckoo Land: A Novel by Anthony Doerr.

Title: Cloud Cuckoo Land: A Novel
Rating: 5/5 Stars

Author: Anthony Doerr
Publisher: Scribner
Publication Date: September 28, 2021
Language: English
Hardcover: 640 pages
Meet the Author: Anthony Doerr

Book Description

From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of All the Light We Cannot See, perhaps the most bestselling and beloved literary fiction of our time, comes the highly anticipated Cloud Cuckoo Land.

Set in Constantinople in the fifteenth century, in a small town in present-day Idaho, and on interstellar ship decades from now, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflect our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be hereafter, we’re gone.

Thirteen-year-old Anna, an orphan, lives inside the formidable walls of Constantinople in a house of women who make their living embroidering the robes of priests. Restless, insatiably curious, Anna learns to read, and in this ancient city, famous for its libraries, she finds a book, the story of Aethon, who longs to be turned into a bird so that he can fly to a utopian paradise in the sky. This she reads to her ailing sister as the walls of the only place she has known are bombarded in the great siege of Constantinople. Outside the walls is Omeir, a village boy, miles from home, conscripted with his beloved oxen into the invading army. His path and Anna’s will cross.

Five hundred years later, in a library in Idaho, octogenarian Zeno, who learned Greek as a prisoner of war, rehearses five children in a play adaptation of Aethon’s story, preserved against all odds through centuries. Tucked among the library shelves is a bomb, planted by a troubled, idealistic teenager, Seymour. This is another siege. And in a not-so-distant future, on the interstellar ship Argos, Konstance is alone in a vault, copying on scraps of sacking the story of Aethon, told to her by her father. She has never set foot on our planet.

Like Marie-Laure and Werner in All the Light We Cannot See, Anna, Omeir, Seymour, Zeno, and Konstance are dreamers and outsiders who find resourcefulness and hope in the midst of the gravest danger. Their lives are gloriously intertwined. Doerr’s dazzling imagination transports us to worlds so dramatic and immersive that we forget, for a time, our own. Dedicated to “the librarians then, now, and in the years to come,” Cloud Cuckoo Land is a beautiful and redemptive novel about stewardship—of the book, of the Earth, of the human heart.

My Thoughts

In all honesty, it was really hard to get into this book at first however, once you pass the first 50-75 pages, it is totally worth it.

It still amazes me how wonderful and well-crafted Anthony Doerr's writing is. You can tell in every detail, in every page. I was so excited to read this his newest book, very different setting and atmosphere from All The Ligth We Can Not See, which is my favorite of his, but still an unforgettable and amazing story.

Thank you Scribner and Netgalley for the advanced free copy, in exchange for an honest review.

Book Review: Beautiful Country: A Memoir by Qian Julie Wang-Memoir

Hello dear Readers,

Below my book review of Beautiful Country: A Memoir by Qian Julie Wang.

Language: English
Hardcover: 320 pages

Book Description

The moving story of an undocumented child living in poverty in the richest country in the world—an incandescent debut from an astonishing new talent.

“Heartrending, unvarnished, and powerfully courageous, this account of growing up undocumented in America will never leave you."—Gish Jen, author of The Resisters

In Chinese, the word for America, Mei Guo, translates directly to “beautiful country.” Yet when seven-year-old Qian arrives in New York City in 1994, she is overwhelmed by crushing fear and scarcity. In China, Qian’s parents were professors; in America, her family is “illegal” and it will require all the determination and small joys they can muster to survive.

In Chinatown, Qian’s parents work in sweatshops and sushi factories. Instead of laughing at her jokes or watching her sing and dance, they fight constantly. Qian goes to school hungry, where she teaches herself English through library books, her only source of comfort. At home, Qian's headstrong and resilient Ma Ma ignores her own pain until she's unable to stand, too afraid of the cost and attention a hospital visit might bring. And yet, young Qian, now acting as her mother's nurse, her family's translator, a student, and a worker cannot ask for help. The number-one rule in America still stands: To be noticed is to risk losing everything.

Searing and unforgettable, Beautiful Country is an essential American story about a family fracturing under the weight of invisibility, and a girl coming of age in the shadows, who never stops seeking the light.

My Thoughts

What a heartbreaking story, and then, one of self-discovery and courage.

Qian. All that she had to endure at such young age, knowing all the pain and the memories will last forever. We live so immersed in our own lives, our own difficulties and successes, that when we read stories like this, it feels almost like a distant thing, like if that could only happen to people far away but not to us.

I had to admit, it was almost impossible not to cry reading Qian's memoir. Especially when talking about her mother. All the sacrifices and the changes she went through, and how she relied on her daughter and not the other way around. It was really hard to digest all of it.  And Qian's father. I believe deep inside, one reason for his behavior had to do perhaps with feeling guilty about leaving his family behind to pursue a better life in the United States so he could ensure a better life for them as well but as we know, sometimes in life, things don't go as planned and everything can change, people can change. A place can make people become a completely different person.

Really hard story to read but I hope that Qian tells us more about the rest on her life in another book.

Book Review: Razorblade Tears: A Novel by S.A. Cosby-Thriller

 Hello dear Readers,

My book review of Razorblade Tears: A Novel by S.A. Cosby.

Title: Razorblade Tears: A Novel

Book Description

Ike Randolph has been out of jail for fifteen years, with not so much as a speeding ticket in all that time. But a Black man with cops at the door knows to be afraid.

The last thing he expects to hear is that his son Isiah has been murdered, along with Isiah’s white husband, Derek. Ike had never fully accepted his son but is devastated by his loss.

Derek’s father Buddy Lee was almost as ashamed of Derek for being gay as Derek was ashamed of his father's criminal record. Buddy Lee still has contacts in the underworld, though, and he wants to know who killed his boy.

Ike and Buddy Lee, two ex-cons with little else in common other than a criminal past and a love for their dead sons, band together in their desperate desire for revenge. In their quest to do better for their sons in death than they did in life, hardened men Ike and Buddy Lee will confront their own prejudices about their sons and each other, as they rain down vengeance upon those who hurt their boys.

Provocative and fast-paced, S. A. Cosby's Razorblade Tears is a story of bloody retribution, heartfelt change - and maybe even redemption.

“A visceral full-body experience, a sharp jolt to the heart, and a treat for the senses…Cosby's moody southern thriller marries the skillful action and plotting of Lee Child with the atmosphere and insight of Attica Locke.” ―NPR

My Thoughts

One of my favorite books of the year. That is how good this book is.

"No, hate. Folks like to talk about revenge like it's a righteous thing but it's just hate in a nicer suit," Ike said.

"You both think our sexuality is something that has to be explained. . It isn't. It's just who we are. It wasn't Isiah being gay that caused problems between the two of you. It was how you dealt with it or didn't deal with it that caused the problems," Amelia said.

I was hooked from page one, and couldn't stop reading. The fast-paced atmosphere, the sequence of events. How well the two main characters interact with each other, Ike and Buddy Lee.

However, what I loved the most about Razorblade Tears is the honesty, the sincerity, the openness with which topics on LGBT, Sexuality, Racism are treated, talked about, and shown. It is a very raw, heartbreaking fictional work however, it is about situations that are very real in our society.

I will recommend this book 100%, and looking forward to reading more of S.A. Cosby.

Book Review: Survive the Night: A Novel by Riley Sager-Mystery/Thriller/Horror

Book Description

One of New York Times Book Review's "summer reads guaranteed to make your heart thump and your skin crawl"; An Amazon Best of the Month Pick; Named a must-read summer book by The Washington Post, Vulture, BuzzFeed, Forbes, Entertainment Weekly, CNN, New York Post, Good Housekeeping, E!, PopSugar, CrimeReads, Thrillist, and BookRiot.

It’s November 1991. Nirvana's in the tape deck, George H. W. Bush is in the White House, and movie-obsessed college student Charlie Jordan is in a car with a man who might be a serial killer.

Josh Baxter, the man behind the wheel, is a virtual stranger to Charlie. They met at the campus ride board, each looking to share the long drive home to Ohio. Both have good reasons for wanting to get away. For Charlie, it’s guilt and grief over the shocking murder of her best friend, who became the third victim of the man known as the Campus Killer. For Josh, it’s to help care for his sick father—or so he says.

The longer she sits in the passenger seat, the more Charlie notices there’s something suspicious about Josh, from the holes in his story about his father to how he doesn’t want her to see inside the trunk. As they travel an empty, twisty highway in the dead of night, an increasingly anxious Charlie begins to think she’s sharing a car with the Campus Killer. Is Josh truly dangerous? Or is Charlie’s jittery mistrust merely a figment of her movie-fueled imagination?

One thing is certain—Charlie has nowhere to run and no way to call for help. Trapped in a terrifying game of cat and mouse played out on pitch-black roads and in neon-lit parking lots, Charlie knows the only way to win is to survive the night.

My Thoughts

Enjoyable enough but unfortunately, this was not my favorite Riley’s book.

I think the story was dragged way too much, and that took big part of the suspense and surprise out of it. Low-paced and at times, little boring. Enough to finish it but not to wow me.

The Therapist did not disappoint. I love how the author keeps coming with these amazing stories, without losing her essence, and even though none of her books after Behind Closed Doors have been that dark, but still, thrilling enough to keep us wanting more.

I can honestly say I would ready anything B.A. Paris writers, and cannot wait for her next book.

Book Description

Four famous siblings throw an epic party to celebrate the end of the summer. But over the course of twenty-four hours, their lives will change forever.

“One of the most anticipated [books] of the year—and rightfully so. . . . It’s a must-read.”—Parade

Malibu: August 1983. It’s the day of Nina Riva’s annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: Nina, the talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer; and their adored baby sister, Kit. Together the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over—especially as the offspring of the legendary singer Mick Riva.

The only person not looking forward to the party of the year is Nina herself, who never wanted to be the center of attention, and who has also just been very publicly abandoned by her pro tennis player husband. Oh, and maybe Hud—because it is long past time for him to confess something to the brother from whom he’s been inseparable since birth.

Jay, on the other hand, is counting the minutes until nightfall, when the girl he can’t stop thinking about promised she’ll be there.

And Kit has a couple secrets of her own—including a guest she invited without consulting anyone.

By midnight the party will be completely out of control. By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames. But before that first spark in the early hours before dawn, the alcohol will flow, the music will play, and the loves and secrets that shaped this family’s generations will all come rising to the surface.

Malibu Rising is a story about one unforgettable night in the life of a family: the night they each have to choose what they will keep from the people who made them . . . and what they will leave behind.

My Thoughts

I have read other books by the author, and loved them. Malibu Rising did not disappoint.

I listened to the audiobook, and that made it even better.

Malibu Rising is one of these books which takes you into a wild journey. Big part of it is, the fantastic job by the author on character development. And also, that unique writing style by Taylor, in my opinion, no other author writes books like she does. Something about it that you don't want the book to end, you cannot put it down, or in my case, stop listening.

Nina Riva, and her siblings, characters hard to forget. Liked how the story is told going back and forth, from their past to their present time; that shift in time period makes the story a lot more interesting.

This book is so good, all the emotions. I cried, laughed, and got mad but at the end, a beautifully written story.

The writing, the premise, the characters. All boxes checked on this one. TJR did it, again.

Book Review: The Maidens: A Novel by Alex Michaelides-Mystery/Thriller/Suspense

Hello dear Readers,

My book review of The Maidens: A Novel by Alex Michaelides.

Publisher: Celadon Books
Publication Date: June 15, 2021
Language: English
Hardcover: 352 pages

Book Description

"Alex Michaelides’s long-awaited next novel, 'The Maidens,' is finally here...the premise is enticing and the elements irresistible."
―The New York Times

"A deliciously dark, elegant, utterly compulsive readwith a twist that blew my mind. I loved this even more than I loved The Silent Patient and that's saying something!"
Lucy Foley, New York Times bestselling author of The Guest List

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Silent Patient comes a spellbinding tale of psychological suspense, weaving together Greek mythology, murder, and obsession, that further cements “Michaelides as a major player in the field” (Publishers Weekly).

Edward Fosca is a murderer. Of this Mariana is certain. But Fosca is untouchable. A handsome and charismatic Greek tragedy professor at Cambridge University, Fosca is adored by staff and students alike―particularly by the members of a secret society of female students known as The Maidens.

Mariana Andros is a brilliant but troubled group therapist who becomes fixated on The Maidens when one member, a friend of Mariana’s niece Zoe, is found murdered in Cambridge.

Mariana, who was once herself a student at the university, quickly suspects that behind the idyllic beauty of the spires and turrets, and beneath the ancient traditions, lies something sinister. And she becomes convinced that, despite his alibi, Edward Fosca is guilty of the murder. But why would the professor target one of his students? And why does he keep returning to the rites of Persephone, the maiden, and her journey to the underworld?

When another body is found, Mariana’s obsession with proving Fosca’s guilt spirals out of control, threatening to destroy her credibility as well as her closest relationships. But Mariana is determined to stop this killer, even if it costs her everything―including her own life.

My Thoughts

I read The Silent Patient and loved it. One of the best books I read in 2019. It was such a different thriller from all the others I read before. I could not put it down. I was very excited when they announced Alex Michaelides was coming up with a new book.

The Maidens, of course, very different from The Silent Patient, but something about the author's writing, that is still the same, so good, it makes immerse yourself in the story, and the characters, whether you want it or not. I like how I thought I had it all figured out, though, I was not even close.

I listened to the audiobook, and the narrators, Louise Brealey and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, did a fantastic job, and that was one other reason why I liked the book a lot.

My Thoughts

Atomic Habits is a very well known, popular title among the book community. It immediately caught my attention. It took me a little longer than expected to finish it, but glad I did. I listened to it on my audiobook app, narrated by the author himself, and enjoyed it a lot.

Atomic Habits is a well-explained, easy to understand guide on Habits. Either you are beginning to implement those in your life, or like me, to help complement/improve what you are already doing in your daily life.

I have read a lot of self help book and have to say what I like the most about Atomic Habits is that it is easy to go through it, without feeling overwhelmed with too much, complex information. It is straight to the point, and written in a way that is is easy to understand.

I also loved how the author first started the book explaining what happened to him early in his life, and how that helped him to be where he is now. Most important, how his experiences are helping so many other people to have a better life through this book.

I totally recommend Atomic Habits.
