NaNoWriMo 2015

Hello dear readers and writers,

With Day 1 of National Novel Writing Month 2015 (NaNoWriMo) getting close, two more days, I wanted to share with you a few recommendations or tips based on my experience participating in this great challenge the last two years.

My first year doing NaNoWrimo back in 2013 was not planned at all. I did not have any idea there was such thing as Nanowrimo. One day surfing the library's web site I saw a post about Nano and all the activities planned for the month of November so I decided to check Nano's website and see what it was about and that was how three weeks before it started I signed up. I had so much fun that first year. I won. I wrote my 50000 words. I did not finish my first draft but it was definitely a good start and an awesome experience. I had the chance to meet lots of writers who get together every year for the Kick Off Party and the Write Ins taking place in libraries, coffee shops, Barnes and Noble and who also stay connected in social media

These two years participating in Nanowrimo and also Campnanowrimo have made such a big difference in my life as a writer and also as a reader. So glad I can participate again this year and glad I can share with you what I have learned.

Here some of my recommendations.

1. Write.Write.Write. Keep in mind this is not just about writing a 50000 words novel in one month. This is a great opportunity to do what we love, to start that book we always wanted to write and to make the time to write. No matter if you do not accomplish the daily word count, the most important thing is keep writing. Knowing that you write at least a few words every day, for 30 days, I can tell you right there is what makes the difference between 'I'm a writer" and "I want to be a writer".

2. Have a back up plan. This year for Campnanowrimo there were times when I did not feel like working on my Memoir so I did a lot of freewriting. I just wrote about whatever came to my mind and was feeling at the moment. That worked perfect for me and eventually I got back to my Memoir. This year I know what I will be writing but I decided to have a back up plan anyway. A book with 500 writing prompts, just in case.

3. Read. I know this is a writing challenge but last year I had a hard time working on what I planned for Nano. There were days I did not feel like writing at all so I decided to read. I think sometimes all we need is a break from writing and occupy our minds in other things like reading. In my case reading helped me not only to lower my TBR pile but it also helped me to relax, continue writing my Memoir and I enjoyed the challenged more.

4. Go to the Write Ins. I have found it very helpful. Having the chance to get together with other writers, socialize, write together, find other writers writing the same genre as you are and get advice from other fellow writers is definitely an amazing experience. When for some reason I do not feel like writing at home, Write Ins during Nanowrimo are an excellent option. There were times in the past when I got more writing done at a Write In than at home.

Hope you all participating in Nanowrimo this year have a great time. Just write, fear not, focus and most of all enjoy it. Doing what we love is a privilege and a blessing.

Happy Writing.

Book Review: Dumplin' by Julie Murphy/Teens-Fiction

Hello dear Readers,

Below my book review of Dumplin' by Julie Murphy.

Title: Dumplin'
Rating: 3/5 Stars
Publication Date: September 15, 2015
Genre: Teen-Fiction
Author: Julie Murphy
Publisher: Balzer+Bray
Language: English
Hardcover: 384 pages
Meet the Author: Julie Murphy
Buy Me: Amazon

Book Description

For fans of John Green and Rainbow Rowell comes this powerful novel with the most fearless heroine—self-proclaimed fat girl Willowdean Dickson—from Julie Murphy, the acclaimed author of Side Effects May Vary. With starry Texas nights, red candy suckers, Dolly Parton songs, and a wildly unforgettable heroine—Dumplin’ is guaranteed to steal your heart.
Dubbed “Dumplin’” by her former beauty queen mom, Willowdean has always been at home in her own skin. Her thoughts on having the ultimate bikini body? Put a bikini on your body. With her all-American-beauty best friend, Ellen, by her side, things have always worked . . .  until Will takes a job at Harpy’s, the local fast-food joint. There she meets Private School Bo, a hot former jock. Will isn’t surprised to find herself attracted to Bo. But she is surprised when he seems to like her back.
Instead of finding new heights of self-assurance in her relationship with Bo, Will starts to doubt herself. So she sets out to take back her confidence by doing the most horrifying thing she can imagine: entering the Miss Teen Blue Bonnet Pageant—along with several other unlikely candidates—to show the world that she deserves to be up there as much as any twiggy girl does. Along the way, she’ll shock the hell out of Clover City—and maybe herself most of all.

My Thoughts

I had high hopes for this book but unfortunately I did not like it. I did not hate it but it was not as good as I thought it would be. I really wanted to like it, with every page I hoped the story was going to take off but it did not do it for me. The main problem I had with this book was that for most part it was confusing and weird, I felt a little bit of a mess as to what the characters, specially Dumplin were trying to show us. For a book that it seems to be about body positivism, being yourself despite of what others think I was very upset with the main character Dumplin who I felt through the whole book did not show a lot of self respect and treated herself sometimes with a very low opinion and sometimes I felt she judged the other characters who were supposed to be her friends. In general her character made me feel angry. Like I said, I kept reading because I thought it was going to get better but at the end I did not connect with characters, their feelings, their emotions, with the story. I think the story has potential but it was not well developed in my opinion. I kept waiting and hoping for that wow factor, that incredible ending but it did not happen.

New Release Tuesday #13: Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl: A Memoir by Carrie Brownstein October 27, 2015

Hello dear Readers,

This week, a Memoir. Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl: A Memoir by Carrie Brownstein.

Title: Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl
Genre: Biographies/Memoirs
Author: Carrie Brownstein
Publisher: Riverhead Books
Publication Date: October 27, 2015
Language: English
Hardcover: 256 pages
Meet the Author: Carrie Brownstein
Buy Me: Amazon

Book Description

Before Carrie Brownstein became a music icon, she was a young girl growing up in the Pacific Northwest just as it was becoming the setting for one the most important movements in rock history. Seeking a sense of home and identity, she would discover both while moving from spectator to creator in experiencing the power and mystery of a live performance. With Sleater-Kinney, Brownstein and her bandmates rose to prominence in the burgeoning underground feminist punk-rock movement that would define music and pop culture in the 1990s. They would be cited as “America’s best rock band” by legendary music critic Greil Marcus for their defiant, exuberant brand of punk that resisted labels and limitations, and redefined notions of gender in rock.

HUNGER MAKES ME A MODERN GIRL is an intimate and revealing narrative of her escape from a turbulent family life into a world where music was the means toward self-invention, community, and rescue. Along the way, Brownstein chronicles the excitement and contradictions within the era’s flourishing and fiercely independent music subculture, including experiences that sowed the seeds for the observational satire of the popular television series Portlandia years later.
With deft, lucid prose Brownstein proves herself as formidable on the page as on the stage. Accessibly raw, honest and heartfelt, this book captures the experience of being a young woman, a born performer and an outsider, and ultimately finding one’s true calling through hard work, courage and the intoxicating power of rock and roll.

Book Review: After You by Jojo Moyes/Novel-Adult Fiction

Hello dear Readers,

Below my review of After You by Jojo Moyes. The sequel of Me Before You.

Title: After You
Rating: 5/5 Stars
Genre: Novel-Adult Fiction
Author: Jojo Moyes
Publisher: Pamela Dorman Books
Publication Date: September 29, 2015
Language: English
Hardcover: 368 pages
Buy Me: Amazon Barnes&Noble Hastings
Meet the Author: Jojo Moyes

Book Description

When one story ends, another begins. The sequel to the beloved New York Times million-copy bestseller, Me Before You.

How do you move on after losing the person you loved? How do you build a life worth living?

Louisa Clark is no longer just an ordinary girl living an ordinary life. After the transformative six months spent with Will Traynor, she is struggling without him. When an extraordinary accident forces Lou to return home to her family, she can’t help but feel she’s right back where she started.
Her body heals, but Lou herself knows that she needs to be kick-started back to life. Which is how she ends up in a church basement with the members of the Moving On support group, who share insights, laughter, frustrations, and terrible cookies. They will also lead her to the strong, capable Sam Fielding—the paramedic, whose business is life and death, and the one man who might be able to understand her. Then a figure from Will’s past appears and hijacks all her plans, propelling her into a very different future. . . .
For Lou Clark, life after Will Traynor means learning to fall in love again, with all the risks that brings. But here Jojo Moyes gives us two families, as real as our own, whose joys and sorrows will touch you deeply, and where both changes and surprises await.
After You is quintessential Jojo Moyes—a novel that will make you laugh, cry, and rejoice at being back in the world she creates. Here she does what few novelists can do—revisits beloved characters and takes them to places neither they nor we ever expected.

My Thoughts

I read Me Before You only a few months ago and I absolutely loved it. It made me cry, it broke my heart, but the story of Louisa and Will is one that I will never forget. Me Before You is such a sad book but at the same time a wonderful one. When I knew there was a sequel releasing this year I was so excited and happy about it. I was really curious to know what happened to Louisa, her family and the Traynor family after Me Before You. Now that After You was finally released and I read it I can say the wait was all worth it.

After You follows the story of Louisa after losing Will, and how she goes back home, gets a job and deals with Will's death the best she can. Seems like no matter what she cannot move on. One day at her apartment she has an accident and that is when she meets Sam, the ambulance guy who takes her to the hospital and ends up playing a big part in Louisa's healing journey. Her family thinks it was not an accident but that she tried to kill herself. After she leaves the hospital Louisa spends some time at her parents house with her grandfather, mom, dad, sister and nephew but after a while she feels it is time to go back to her apartment. She goes back but agrees with her father she will join a counseling or therapy group and try once and for all to get over the grief and the pain. In that group she meets all of the other characters in the book and all of them end up helping Louisa to feel better. She learns different things from their own experiences on losing someone they loved. But like if losing Will and having to deal with the pain, the sadness, the struggle and a job that she does not like were not enough, Louisa meets Lilly who completely changes everything in ways that Louisa never though it would be possible.

Louisa is such a strong character. All that she went through in the first book and how in this one she deals with all the things going on and finally finds hope and that change she needed in her life. I was not expecting Lilly and all that she represents but at the end I'm glad that that helped Louisa.

I like how the characters are portrayed and how human they feel, their emotions and how all their stories are connected. I like in this book we have the chance to see more of the Traynor family, and I love how Louisa's mom character is taken to another level and all the changes she goes through. All the characters in the first book changed a lot in this one and it was very interesting to see what the new characters added to the story and the dynamics in both families, Louisa's and Will's.

After You made me cry because reading again about Louisa and Will was sad. I think it will always be hard to revisit these characters but also this book made me happy because everybody in different ways but they all find a little bit of hope and change. I like that Louisa finally lets go and moves on.

After You is about letting go, moving on, lost, family, relationships, love, grief, pain, all these elements that in my opinion the author manages very well and at the end we have a great sequel with a beautiful writing style, a big and important twist, reliable characters and a story we can learn a lot from.

A third book? With the ending of After You it looks like it could happen. I hope it does. I would love to see more of Louisa and her life in New York.

Book Description

A missing God.
A library with the secrets to the universe.
A woman too busy to notice her heart slipping away.

Carolyn's not so different from the other people around her. She likes guacamole and cigarettes and steak. She knows how to use a phone. Clothes are a bit tricky, but everyone says nice things about her outfit with the Christmas sweater over the gold bicycle shorts.

After all, she was a normal American herself once.

That was a long time ago, of course. Before her parents died. Before she and the others were taken in by the man they called Father.

In the years since then, Carolyn hasn't had a chance to get out much. Instead, she and her adopted siblings have been raised according to Father's ancient customs. They've studied the books in his Library and learned some of the secrets of his power. And sometimes, they've wondered if their cruel tutor might secretly be God.

Now, Father is missing—perhaps even dead—and the Library that holds his secrets stands unguarded. And with it, control over all of creation.

As Carolyn gathers the tools she needs for the battle to come, fierce competitors for this prize align against her, all of them with powers that far exceed her own.

But Carolyn has accounted for this.

And Carolyn has a plan.

The only trouble is that in the war to make a new God, she's forgotten to protect the things that make her human.

Populated by an unforgettable cast of characters and propelled by a plot that will shock you again and again, The Library at Mount Char is at once horrifying and hilarious, mind-blowingly alien and heartbreakingly human, sweepingly visionary and nail-bitingly thrilling—and signals the arrival of a major new voice in fantasy.

My Thoughts

My expectations in regards to this book were so high and I was not disappointed. I do not use to read a lot of fantasy but this book delivered. I have to say I was expecting something different because I got confused on what the genre it belongs to was but like I said I was very impressed on how good the book is. I was fascinated by the story, the characters, the story line and how much I wanted to keep reading it. A captivating story which I totally recommend not only for fantasy book lovers but for those who are always looking for an unique and wonderful read.

My thoughts

After reading the description of this book, I was very excited and interested to see what it had to offer.I was expecting something great and I was not disappointed. Funny, hilarious, entertaining. This book follows the story of Dahlia, jobless for over a year, broke, living with a roommate, and how then she is offered a job recovering a spear and how that would lead her to a mystery, a murder. I absolutely loved the character of Dahlia, she is smart, adorable, and full of energy, even though her life is a mess, she is not in her best place and her life does not look that great but she does not allow to be let down by any of this. I liked it from the beginning to the end, made me laugh and made me want to know what was next and know the characters better, which is incredible. I like how the mystery unfolds and how is not predictable at all, kept me guessing the whole time and a satisfying ending. I like the author's writing style and how well the story is presented.

If you are looking for a funny read, with mystery, and great and reliable characters, I totally recommend The Unfortunate Decisions of Dahlia Moss.

Book Review: Stir: My Broken Brain and the Meals That Brought Me Home by Jessica Fechtor/Memoir/NETGALLEY ARC/Published in 2015

Hello dear Readers,

Below, my book review of Stir: My Broken Brain and the Meals That Brought Me Home by Jessica Fechtor.

Title: Stir: My Broken Brain and the Meals That Brought Me Home
Genre: Memoir
Rating: 5/5 stars
Author: Jessica Fechtor
Publisher: Avery
Publication Date: June 23, 2015
Language: English
Hardcover: 288 pages
Meet the Author: Goodreads
Buy Me: Amazon

Book Description

An exquisite memoir about how food connects us to ourselves, our lives, and each other.

At 28, Jessica Fechtor was happily immersed in graduate school and her young marriage, and thinking about starting a family. Then one day, she went for a run and an aneurysm burst in her brain. She nearly died. She lost her sense of smell, the sight in her left eye, and was forced to the sidelines of the life she loved.

Jessica's journey to recovery began in the kitchen as soon as she was able to stand at the stovetop and stir. There, she drew strength from the restorative power of cooking and baking. Written with intelligence, humor, and warmth, Stir is a heartfelt examination of what it means to nourish and be nourished.

Woven throughout the narrative are 27 recipes for dishes that comfort and delight. For readers of M.F.K.Fisher, Molly Wizenberg, and Tamar Adler, as well as Oliver Sacks, Jill Bolte Taylor, and Susannah Cahalan, Stir is sure to inspire, and send you straight to the kitchen.

My thoughts

How a remarkable story of recovery and facing difficult situations in life. Jessica, at age 28 suffers an aneurism. One minute she was living a healthy life and the next her life changed forever. This book shows us her journey through recovery and how she finds comfort and healing in her love for food and cooking. I admire Jessica and how brave she is on fighting her adversity. I was deeply touched by this story on how supportive her family, her husband and friends are. I cannot imagine how hard it was to overcome this obstacle but Jessica shows us in every page of this book that even in the more difficult situations there is always hope. I found interesting and at moments very beautiful how her love for food, brings a new meaning into her life after what she goes through.

In general, I enjoyed reading this book a lot. I like how it combines the memoir part, the food part and the cooking part. I like how well-written it is and the recipes and the stories involving food the Author shares.

If you love reading memoirs, food and like reading about food, cooking and health issues and overcoming adversity, I totally recommend Stir: My Broken Brain and the Meals That Brought Me Home

Book Review: Pop Sonnets: Shakespearean Spins on Your Favorite Songs by Erik Didriksen/Poetry-Humor-/NETGALLEY ARC/Published in 2015

Hello dear Readers,

Below, my book review of Pop Sonnets: Shakespearean Spins on Your Favorite Songs by Erik Didriksen.

Genre: Poetry-Humor
Author: Erik Didriksen
Publisher: Quirk Books

Book Description

The Bard meets the Backstreet Boys in Pop Sonnets, a collection of 100 classic pop songs re imagined as Shakespearean sonnets. All of your favorite artists are represented in these pages--from Bon Jovi and Green Day to Miley Cyrus, Beyoncé, and beyond. Already a smash sensation on the Internet--the Tumblr page has 50,000+ followers--Pop Sonnets has been featured by the A.V. Club, BuzzFeed, andVanity Fair, among many others. More than half of these pop sonnets are exclusive to this collection and have never been published in any form.

My Thoughts

One of the most clever, different and interesting books I have ever read. Funny, and one of those unique books that made me want to share it with everybody around so that they could enjoy it too. That is the best way I can describe this book.

I liked all the sonnets but some of them got to my heart more than others maybe because of the meaning specific songs have for me. I like how a spin of a song that I have listened hundreds of times can make me see it in a different way. Sonnets of love, despair, time and mortality, heroes, rogues. I think this book is a brilliant interpretation or presents a very different perspective of 100 popular rock and pop songs.

I also like that I can see all the effort and hard work the Author put into this book. It is always appreciated when a writer delivers a wonderful book with great quality and professionalism. It surpassed my expectations and I am glad I read it.

If you like Shakespeare, music and are looking for a brilliant and funny book, I totally recommend Pop Sonnets.

Thank you Netgalley and Quirkbooks for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
